Ethernet Digital Audio Receiver A new class of products is being developed to allow Digital Audio to be distributed over an Ethernet network. These Digital Audio Receivers (DARs) come in many forms, but they all have the same basic purpose – to enable users to play centrally stored Digital Audio selections any place where an Ethernet port and stereo system are in close proximity. All DARs contain DACs and are meant to feed line level analog signals to a nearby tuner. Some DARs include digital output ports, facilitating the transfer of Digital Audio selections to the tuner for final conversion to analog. A new class of DARs includes amplification and speakers in the unit itself, meaning that Digital Audio can be played directly by the device without need for an external stereo system. Some products in this class can be controlled by external buttons and knobs or even hand-held remote controls. Many other products in this class have few or no external controls or user feedback and must be controlled and monitored by software.
