THE GREEN SIDE OF LIGHTING CONTROL. By many estimates, lighting can represent as much as 30% of the typical home’s electrical consumption.  There are a number of methods being proposed to reduce this impact.  Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs) are currently in vogue.  They utilize about 25% of the power of common incandescent bulbs which represents a huge savings.  Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are even more efficient, some using only 10% of the power of incandescents.  There are downsides to both.  CFLs are more expensive, the light they throw can be harsh, dimming capability is either non-existent or erratic and they contain trace amounts of mercury which require that they be disposed of carefully.  LEDs are more expensive and do not come in the most common bulb configurations.

Without resorting to new bulbs, you can reduce your lighting use by 25% very easily.  Simply set the default “on” value for each installed UPB module to ramp up to 75% rather than 100%.  Now every time a light comes on, it will shine at 75% power use instead of 100%.  Very few people will notice a substantial difference in lighting effect.

Save money and energy by limiting all lighting circuits to 75% of maximum power.
